About me
I'm Steven, an LA-based composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist making music that moves across genres and moods with over 20 years of experience. From indie rock to film scores, jazz to electronic, I’ve worked as a frontman, collaborator, and solo artist. These days I compose for screen and media, release music as SMXJ, and play guitar live with artists across LA.
I studied music and computer engineering at UVA, blending composition and sound design with a deep dive into tech. After years in San Francisco balancing bands and software, I moved to LA to go all-in on music—writing, producing, performing, and earning a certificate in film scoring from UCLA Extension. Today, I split my time between composing, producing as SMXJ, collaborating with artists, and building creative tools at Descript. I'm especially drawn to writing emotional, immersive music that takes you somewhere new.
